Who Is John Rogers?
I’ve been married to my wife, Sarah, for 39 years and we have three grown kids: Zeke, Asa and Annabel. Asa recently graduated from UNCA (Go Bulldogs).
I was the first in my family to graduate from college, and I’ve never forgotten my roots. I have devoted my life to public service, and to fairness. As a lawyer, I have made sure big corporations keep to the law. In recent years, I’ve been an advocate for working and underserved people throughout Western North Carolina at a low-income taxpayer clinic. I have directly helped residents throughout the region.
Here’s where I started: While working my way through college, I administered the Housing Rehabilitation Program in the City of Takoma Park, Md. I helped low-income residents get low-interest loans and grants.
I’ve always been interested in how systems work—and how to fix them. I worked at the Federal Reserve and the IRS, and my specialty was investigating big corporations and banks. At the Federal Reserve, I worked in the international banking section, where I investigated foreign banks with offices in the United States. I also reviewed the debt restructuring by foreign governments.
After that I went to the Chief Counsel’s office at the IRS, where I worked to make sure big corporations paid what they owed. Basically, I wrote rules so that companies don’t get away with improperly valuing their financial products. I was on the trial team that won the first derivatives valuation case brought by the government. This helped define the fair value of certain financial contracts. I also wrote the regulations setting out how derivatives are valued by derivatives dealers.
After leaving the IRS, I volunteered at Catholic University Law School’s Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic. I now work in Asheville at Pisgah Legal Services’ Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, where I have helped many people across Western North Carolina with their tax problems. This work takes me throughout the region and into peoples’ homes. I have sat with residents in their kitchens and on their porches as we cut through the red tape together.
In short, I know—on a deep level--the solutions needed so hardworking and underserved Americans are no longer fleeced. I have the technical expertise necessary to understand the games played by our nation’s billionaires—and how they hurt the people of Western North Carolina. I know what it will take to stop them.

Would you support my campaign?
You may ask, why support an independent? Wouldn’t a Democrat or Republican be better? Good question!
Let’s look at how we got here: by voting for Democrats and Republicans. Many Republicans like Chuck Edwards embody much of what’s wrong with national politics. The Big Beautiful Bill is nothing but a wealth transfer from regular Americans to the rich. It eliminates rural hospitals and health coverage for working-class Americans, and it turns that savings into tax cuts for the rich and funding for wars abroad. Establishment Republicans have made clear who they support: private equity and hedge funds, monopolies, and war profiteers. And these people and institutions--served largely by the Republican establishment--get rich by extracting money from working Americans.
We also have the issue of the national, establishment Democrats. From so-called “free trade,” to bank bailouts, to their support for endless wars all over the planet, the Democrats have demonstrated that their priorities do not lie with regular Americans. When individual Democrats try to defy the establishment and offer policies that will help ordinary people, the party often actively moves against them. We need real change, right now, and at this point the Democratic establishment appears to have neither the will nor the ability to fully deliver the change that Americans need to live stable, dignified lives.
This is why I am running as an independent. The world is changing and we need to change who we choose as candidates. I hope you agree, and I’d be honored to have your support.
